Veneering a surface with dents and dings. How to smooth out a dented surface before applying veneer. Easy way to fill a dented dented surface before veneering it.

Posted by

Q. I'm veneering a table top that has dents and gouges in the surface.  Is there an easy way to fill the dents and gouges in the table top before I apply the veneer?

A. Get some Bondo from an automotive store. fill as needed and sand smooth. Then apply 2 or 3 coats of paint or varnish.

I suggest that if you have an uneven or dented surface, you should use the 2 ply wood backed veneer.  The 2 ply wood backed veneer is sturdier and it is much less likely to telegraph the dents than the paper backed veneer, which is thinner.
