Do I need to apply heat to the peel and stick veneer?

Don:

I am first time applier of veneer. I am thinking the peel and stick option is best. Do I need to iron the peel and stick to increase adhesion? Do you recommend a veneer straper or a J roller to apply the veneer. Thank you!

Bob Morgan:

Hi Don,

There is no need to apply heat to the peel and stick veneer. After you stick the veneer down, use a 1” wide blunt piece of wood or a 1” wide roller, such as a wallpaper seam roller (not crowned) to apply pressure all over the veneered surface. This helps adhesion of the veneer to the substrate.

I recommend that you use a veneer roller no wider than 1”.Especially – DO NOT use a rolling pin to apply the pressure to the veneered surface. Here’s why:If you apply 20 pounds of pressure on a 1” wide roller, you get 20 lbs of pressure applied to the veneer across the 1” wide area.If you apply 20 pounds of pressure to the veneered surface using a 4” wide roller, you only get 5 pounds of pressure per inch.

I suggest that you check out my veneering tutorials, videos, and Q/A at www.veneer-factory-outlet.com or www.wood-veneer-factory-outlet.com
